How can we help?

Using the website

How do I navigate the Digital Edition on a computer?

The Digital Edition interface, or website, has four main navigation options: the action buttons, the menu, top bar icons, and sidebar icons.

The action buttons give options for printing, downloading, and changing the display.

The menu (the icon with three horizontal bars in the upper left corner) provides links to:

• download options
• walkthrough tour of the interface
• help resources
• other available lessons
• Christian Science resources
• account and password management
• and log out

On the right side of the top bar, you will see a label of the section you are currently viewing. This is the Bible Lesson section navigation. Click it to select another section of the lesson to view.

Icons in the sidebar to the right allow you to open helpful tools:

• Clicking the In-Context icon - a book with a magnifying glass - presents a side panel with a button that takes you to Concord in a new browser tab. Read more under the FAQ How does the In-Context tab work?
• A headphones icon that can be used to listen to the lesson.
• The Bibles icon opens a side panel with select citations as found in various English Bible translations.
• The Research icon opens a side panel with extra content (e.g. commentaries and word definitions) to enhance your understanding of Bible Lesson.
• An on/off toggle is used to choose if you want the sidebar icons to change color as you scroll through the lesson. Read more under the FAQ “How does the on/off toggle work?

How do I navigate the Digital Edition on a mobile device?

Navigating on a mobile device is the same as navigating with a computer except that the icons are located at the bottom of the screen and will open panels from the bottom instead of from the side. These items are described in the preceding FAQ How do I navigate the digital Bible Lesson on a computer?

How does the Bible Lens on/off toggle work?

When this toggle is set to “on”, the Bible Lens icons for Research and Translations will change color as you scroll through the lesson. A colored tab indicates related content is available for one or more citations on your screen. Setting the switch to the “off” position keeps the focus on the lesson by keeping the icons a standard gray color.

How can I select a different font size on the Digital Edition website?

If you are reading the Bible Lesson online, you can increase or decrease the size of the font on your screen by selecting the Display button and then selecting your desired font size in the slider.

To edit the font size when you print the lesson, please follow these instructions.

How do I find word definitions?

Some words are defined in the Research tab. If you’re on a mobile device and the Research tab doesn’t contain the definition you’re looking for, you can also click and hold the word with your finger, wait for a list of options to appear, and select “Look up” or “Define”, depending on the type of phone you are using.

How do I do a keyword search within the Bible Lesson text?

You can do this using your browser's search functionality. To do so, first go to quarterly.christianscience.com/lesson. The easiest way to begin a search is using the keyboard shortcut, which is Ctrl+F on a Windows computer; Option+F on a Mac. The search bar will then appear on your screen in the default location determined by your browser. Once you type in a word or phrase in the search box and hit enter, you can click the up or down arrows next to the search bar to cycle through each time the word appears on the page.

The same thing is possible on mobile devices as well, through the browser’s menu. Click this link to an article on an external website that explains how to do a keyword search on any website (including the Digital Edition lesson page) using your phone or other mobile device.

In addition to searching on the website, it is possible to search in any of the downloaded formats. However, due to adjustments to the formatting of the PDF's to enable them to fit correctly on the pages, unexpected results may sometimes occur when searching this way.

What happens if I click a blue citation?

Clicking on a blue citation link will open Concord in a new tab in your browser and present you with the option to either log in if you are a registered Concord user, or click the “Continue as guest” button for free access.

Once you either sign in or continue with guest access, you will be taken to Concord where the citation you clicked on will display in the book. The other citations from the lesson will display to the right as a list.

The other citations from the lesson will display to the right as a list, if you are on a computer.  On a mobile device, you can access the list by clicking the “Lists” icon in the bottom bar. You may need to close the gray cookies banner that may appear on the bottom of the screen in order to see the bottom bar.

To exit Concord and return to the Digital Edition website, click the “x” icon in the Concord tab if you are on a computer. If you are using a mobile device, click the icon that lets you see screens of all open tabs in your browser, then click on the Digital Edition screen.

For details about seeing a full list of citations in Concord, see the FAQ How does the In-Context tab work?

How does the In-Context tab work?

To see how to use In-Context, watch this computer tutorial video or this mobile tutorial video. Or keep reading if you prefer written instructions.

Clicking the In-Context icon presents a button that takes you to Concord in a new browser tab.  (The In-Context icon is a book with a magnifying glass that is located at the bottom of the screen.)

In Concord, you have the option to either log in if you are a registered Concord user, or click the “Continue as guest” button for free access.

Once you either sign in or continue with guest access, you will see a list of the Bible Lesson citations for that week. Use the following instructions to read the Bible Lesson citations as they appear in the text of the Bible or Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

On a computer: The citation list should be on the right side of your screen. If it is not displayed, click on the green “Lists” icon in the upper right to view the list of citations for that lesson. To read the citations as they appear in the context of the Pastor, select the citation reference you’d like from the list. Then, click the text itself that appears below the citation reference.  You can then advance through the lesson in one of the following ways:

1) Click another citation reference and text from the list.

2) Use the Previous and Next buttons below the main pane. To do this, you may need to first close the gray cookies banner that may appear on the bottom of the screen.

3) Select the main pane with the book’s text and use the left and right arrows on your keyboard.

On mobile:  The citation list should fill your screen. If it is not displayed, click the “Lists” icon in the bottom icon bar. In order to see the bottom icon bar, you may need to first close the gray cookies banner that may appear on the bottom of the screen.  You can then advance through the lesson as follows:

1) Select the citation reference you’d like from the list. Then, click the text itself that appears below the citation reference. If you navigate away from the citation list, click the “Lists” icon in the bottom icon bar again to see the list again.

2) Once you are viewing the citation in the context of the books, use the Previous and Next links that sit right above the bottom icon bar (where the “Read” icon is highlighted).

NOTE FOR ALL DEVICES:  If the Golden Text and/or Responsive Reading is from another Bible translation, the text will only appear as an annotation in the list. Clicking that text will NOT bring the passage up in context as it appears in the Bible because Concord only includes the King James Version.

For more help using lists in Concord, including labeled screenshots, visit this Concord help page.

In addition to reading the Bible Lesson in context, you can use Concord for citation searches or for general word or phrase searches. NOTE: If you begin a Search in Concord, the Previous and Next links will navigate through your search results instead of the Bible Lesson citation list. To return to the Bible Lesson, click “Lists” and begin from step #1 above.

To exit Concord and return to the Digital Edition website, click the “x” icon in the Concord tab if you are on a computer. If you are using a mobile device, click the icon that lets you see screens of all open tabs in your browser, then click on the Digital Edition screen.

Do I need a Concord subscription to use the In-Context feature?

No. When you use the In-Context tab’s button to go to Concord, you can simply click “Continue as Guest” to read the Bible Lesson citations in the contexts of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

While any subscriber to the Digital Edition of the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons can access the in-Context version of the lesson, only Concord subscribers can save those citations (and any personal annotations) in lists that are retained for more than an hour. A paid Concord subscription is also necessary to search the Christian Science Hymnal. For more details about the difference between subscribed and guest access to Concord, check out this FAQ on the Concord site.

Will I be able to access past lessons saved as lists in Concord?

A group of five Bible Lessons will be available when you log in to the Digital Edition of the Christian Science Quarterly: this week’s lesson, lessons for the three coming weeks, and last week’s lesson. All citation lists accessed through the In-Context link will be retained, along with any annotations added by the user, in a Bible Lessons folder in Concord. That folder, its lists, and any annotations are saved indefinitely for Concord subscribers. Guest access Concord users will lose the lists and annotations after one hour. The lists of each lesson are named according to the date on which that Bible Lesson is read in church.

Concord subscribers, please note: For any lesson sermon that you do not access at least once with the In-Context button in the Digital Edition of the Christian Science Quarterly, you will not have that lesson’s citations added as a list to Concord.  If you delete a citation list and that lesson is no longer available on the Digital Edition website, you will not be able to receive another copy of that citation list in Concord.

Can I take notes while reading the Digital Edition?

While you cannot highlight or take notes on the Digital Edition website itself, there are three other options for taking notes:

  1. Take notes online using the In-Context feature (accessed through the In-Context tab). In the citation list view in Concord, click the pencil icon next to the citation you want to add a note about. Then type anything you want in the field that appears below that says “Enter annotation here”. Please note that these annotations are only preserved for more than an hour if you have a paid subscription to Concord. If you would like to preserve your annotations, please copy and paste your list with its annotations to your preferred word processor and save it there. For more details, see How does the In-Context tab work? and Do I need a Concord subscription to use the In-Context feature?
  2. Take notes and highlight offline on a downloaded version of the lesson, using the functionality of your device or software (e.g. commenting in Acrobat reader, highlighting/commenting in iOS Books, etc.). This requires first downloading the lesson using one of the download options from the Downloads button. For help with downloading, please review the Help section on Reading offline.
  3. Print the lesson (and/or Bible Lens PDF) to take handwritten notes offline.
